We recently headed to Medibank Icehouse at Docklands to check out their Under 8’s Ice FUN sessions.
I haven’t skated since the 80s and my kids have never done it before, so we were all excited and a little nervous (or maybe that was just me).
Under 8’s Ice FUN is a drop in session designed to introduce toddlers and children to ice skating. Ice Ambassadors will assist and take the children through games using toys, music and snow play areas to give your child a totally different toddler experience.
When: every Sunday 9am – 10am
Who: children under 8 – Parents can join their children on the ice in skates or shoes.
What to wear: warm comfortable clothes, long socks and gloves. Change of clothes is recommended as children will be playing in snow. Skates or shoes can be worn by children and adults.
Don’t forget the warm clothing! We went on a day that was really hot and silly me forgot to put jumpers and jackets in my bag, so some of us were a little chilly – oops!
As you can see, the kids had so much fun.
Master 4 was quite happy to have someone push him around on the seal and collect ice to throw at me and his sister.
Miss 7 (aka Miss Independent) enjoyed pushing her own seal around or skating with me while we held hands.
Thankfully I didn’t have any stacks and the kids declared me “the best skater” on the day. I’m still waiting for my trophy though. I bet my husband has hidden it because they didn’t pick him 😉
If you head down to the Icehouse these school holidays, there are a tonne of activities to suit kids of all ages. Choose from
Under 8’s Ice FUN sessions or go and try your hand at ice hockey.

We keep cool in the Melbourne summer just splashing about in the kids toddler pool, and then cranking up the aircon when we come indoors. But a morning out at Medibank Icehouse would be awesome!!!

We tend to hibernate during the hottest days, blinds down and air conditioning on. When heat of the day has passed you can find Poss jumping on the trampoline and us spraying her with the hose… old school fun!
And you know I follow you on IG!

We love lazy days in the backyard pool. I’m not a fan so I sit happily in the shade reading and getting splashed. A LOT.

The only way we can keep cool is by going to the beach! Our house is a little hot box in Summer 🙁

We hang out in the huge inflatable waterslide/pool in our backyard in between eating sorbet and cold watermelon 🙂

Escape to nana’s air conditioning

To kill two birds with one stone they say. I have found two great uses for the garden hose. The kids love to cool down by running under the hose whilst I water the garden.

In my uni days I lived in a bedsitter with a tin roof and had a kiddie wading pool in the living room! These days it is with a portable air con, trips to the local shopping centre where it is nice and cool, lots of cold water and icy poles! Cold showers are also good!
Michelle V
We keep cool with lots of water games in the backyard, or chilling out at the local cinemas!

We keep our little ones cool with a dip in the toddler pool, homemade icy-poles & water games in the backyard but would love to spend a hot day at Medibank icehouse under 8’s session what a great idea!

We have what we call a “jockeys party” for the kids…all three just running around in underpants at home. 🙂
Kerry
Paddling pool filled with water and water pistols for the whole family, followed by icy poles and sitting under the air con watching movies.
Laura
I’ve just bought some ice block moulds, today we are going to make yoghurt smoothie ice creams!
Lucy
We have an inflatable waterslide with water cannon. My daughter loves to just sit in the pool at the bottom with an icy pole in each hand – that kid DOES know how to deal with heat lol
Kris
We have three young kids and we just fill the shell pools with water and have a sprinkler going. Keeps the kids happy for hours!
Liz Pizarro
Water: beach, pools, Royal Botanic Gardens, etc. Ice sounds like fun on a cool day though!
Claire Chascarrillo
I have a sushi train plastic fan I take everywhere. My daughter and any kid we see always want to have a go so I guess you could it keeps them more cool than me. But I must leave my water bottle in the fridge overnight, it is great on a hot day 🙂
Amber
We keep cool by picking teams and having giant water bomb fights in the backyard. Someone (usually dad) finishes the game with a big bucket of water.

Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes.
ang
to keep cool we stay cool with lots of liquids, frozen drinks and heaps of swimming at the pool/beach whilst snacking on watermelon, cantelope, strawberries and grapes best on a hot day then a icy pole to top it off
Sam Bradley
The heat doesn’t keep our active family from enjoying the outdoors, so lots of beach and pool visits, along with normal trips to the zoo, parks, friends, etc. we try to cool down with icy poles in the bath when we get home. (But ice skating sounds like a good plan)

Kids & I enjoy slip n slide, zooper doopers & splash under the good old sprinkler!! Medibank ice house would be a great experience!
